Stabilizing the Material
is key to making a T-shirt Quilt

December 18th...

After you have cut up all the t-shirts stabilizing the material is absolutely essential. You will need to eliminate the stretchiness of the t-shirt fabric by ironing on a fusible interfacing. I prefer to use a fusible lightweight woven cotton, as the cotton does not stretch at all!

When rotary cutting the fusible interfacing make sure you cut it a little smaller than the t-shirt fabric, so you don't get it stuck all over your ironing board.

Now its time to iron the fusible interfacing to the t-shirt fabric. Iron it onto the back of the portion of the t-shirt you wish to use in the quilt (follow the directions that come with the product), and cut it to the size you are using for your block. Your block size is dependent upon the size of the message/logo you want to fit into it. This fusible interfacing required a damp press cloth as shown in the photos.

The blocks I'm making have ended up being 14 1/2 x 16 1/2 because the racing t-shirts have a very large graphic on the front. I will add fabric to the smaller logos to increase the size those blocks.
