Freezer Paper Applique Techniques and Tips

With Freezer Paper Applique start by tracing your appliqué design onto freezer paper, and cut out each piece along the pencil line. Using the freezer paper shape as your pattern, cut out the fabric piece, adding ¼” seam allowance all the way around.

Lay the freezer paper on top of the wrong side of the fabric piece, shiny side up. Fold ¼” seam allowance over the edge of the freezer paper shape, and with the tip of your iron (no steam), press the seam allowance in place. You may have to clip curves and corners.

Leaving the freezer paper in place, pin the appliqué piece in position on your background fabric, and hand stitch. Cut away the fabric behind the appliqué piece (leaving approximately ¼” seam allowance, and remove the paper with tweezers.

It is advisable to practice this applique technique with scrap fabric before starting your quilting project with the fabric that you will be using for your applique.
