Learn how to cut and piece basic quilt blocks

Summer Winds Quilting Block

Quilt Block 9 - Summer Winds

The Summer Winds Quilt Block is fabulous, with all those wonderful half square triangle units, and a few flying geese thrown in for good measure!

From background fabric, cut: - one 4 1/2" square for center - One 2 7/8" strip, from this cut six 2 7/8" squares. Draw a diagonal line on the back of each square. - one 2 1/2" strip (across the width of the fabric). Cut this into eight 2 1/2" squares for flying geese corners and four rectangles 2 1/2 x 4 1/2.

From medium fabric, cut: - one 2 1/2" strip. From this, cut four 2 1/2" squares. These will go where I have the green squares above.

From dark fabric, cut: - one 2 1/2" strip. From this strip, cut four 2 1/2" x 4 1/2" rectangles. These are the flying geese. - one 2 7/8" strip. From this cut six 2 7/8" squares.

With right sides together, layer the six dark squares with six background squares. Sew 1/4" on each side of the drawn line, cut on drawn line and press toward the darker fabric.

easy half square triangle blocks

Sew two half square triangle units together as in diagram. Sew one half square triangle unit to each of the medium squares (green on the diagram). Matching center seam, sew these two units together to make the corner units of the Summer Winds quilt block.

Below is a Corner Unit make four of these.

Summer Winds Corner Block

To make flying geese: place one 2 1/2" square of background fabric on one end of the 2 1/2 x 4 1/2" rectangle. Stitch on the diagonal line of the square. Trim away the corner, leaving about 1/4" seam allowance. Repeat for opposite corner (this will overlap at the center). Sew one background fabric rectangle to flying geese as shown in the diagram at the top, to make the side center units.

Lay all units out beside you in the order seen in the diagram. Sew the top row together (press away from center), second row(press toward center), and third row (press away from center). Now sew row 1 to row 2 and then row 3. Nice work!
